ITW Emilie MÖRI Photosensible
A graduate of the prestigious Gobelins school in Paris, Émilie Möri works with advertising agencies, publishing houses, major brands and magazines. Alongside these creations, she is developing a more personal body of work combining photography and digital collage. Dreamlike, surreal and eminently poetic, her compositions convey complex emotions and serve a multitude of themes dear to her heart, such as the Consciences series, a tribute to women, Mother Earth and human nature.
Can you tell us about your background? I was born in Sarcelles, near Paris. I grew up in a large, music-loving family. My father is a painter and my mother is a sculptor. I started drawing and painting at the age of six, and most of my hobbies were related to the visual arts. I became a graphic designer. Then, in 2010, I got interested in photography for small reports. It quickly became an indispensable means of expression, especially when I discovered two years later that this medium and collage could be used to compose imaginary paintings.
How would you define your work? How did you develop your style? Photography and digital collage are wonderful tools. They enable us to create a world in which we can say (almost) anything. I like to compose images to illustrate emotions or freeze a moment. I strive for simplicity, illustrating an idea as minimally as possible. My graphic eye is often at the heart of my creations.
In concrete terms, how do you work? I have a number of notebooks in which I scribble down ideas with key words. I also like to improvise with whatever I have at hand, which is where I have the most fun! For example, this image is made up of a photo taken in 2008 and another in 2019. I was shocked by the polluting behavior of some tourists on this beach. So I imagined an iceberg looming on the horizon, in the shape of a shark, which I had seen in 2008 in Argentina. This collage aims to raise awareness of the importance of changing collective consciousness in the face of global warming.
Do you do any retouching? Yes, there are so many possibilities! I love the poetry of fiction. Over time, however, I've limited the amount of retouching I do to create very real settings. It's a very stimulating exercise, and means you don't have to spend all your time behind a screen!
Your images are also tinged with surrealism, aren't they? Yes, Magritte inspires me a lot. Showing characters and objects that are a priori unexpected calls out, and leaves room for both silence and questioning.
You say that your work today is oriented towards “feminine ataraxia, dreams and timelessness”. How does this translate? What I mean by ataraxia is a certain detachment from the character. A contemplative, serene state. I love images that can't be placed in time.
Can you tell us about the Consciences series? I wanted to create tight, large-format portraits. This series was created in collaboration with Siân Pottok, at the end of 2019, in my studio, using objects and plants at hand. Each triptych illustrates a specific theme, such as freedom of expression, to dispose of one's body, building a home, climate disruption, pollution... These images were finalized in March 2020, just in time for Covid. Unfortunately, we had to cancel the planned exhibitions...
Among the images in our selection, could you comment on one? I often come back to this series. The figure is calm and peaceful, moving in a luminous void of hope. He observes a movement at the heart of his imaginary world. I often use a red scarf to represent a thought (too present) or an addiction.
What are your projects? A new series on the theme of the environment and femininity. I'm looking for an artist's residency abroad for several months to carry out this project.
