Favourites #472: Émilie Möri and Clara Baudry

December 18, 2023 - Written by Apolline Coëffet

Émilie Möri's images plunge us into a world where minimalism is expressed in pastel shades. “I can't get rid of colors. Some of them come back over time in my work, and in spite of myself, they form my visual identity,” she explains. A collector of photo books and strongly inspired by album covers, the artist pays particular attention to those that show portraits animated by raw emotion, movement and dance, or as many subjects that touch her as elements we find in her creations. “My approach is primarily graphic. I sometimes draw on prints, tear them up, I'm not afraid of damaging them to experiment. I shun reportage and prefer staging, the composition of an image. Probably because I won't be showing snapshots of my daily life,” she explains. With modesty, but not without derision, she evokes personal themes such as femininity, love and creativity, as well as the environment, mental burden, mourning and emptiness. Whatever the series, we find the sound of silence, that which invites us to our own music,” she says. It's about showing a certain kind of reality, one that we choose to freeze in order to pass it on to future generations.
